Fabric Suggestions for Circle Skirts
Circle skirts work best with fabrics that drape well and move beautifully. Your choice of fabric will affect how swishy, floaty, or structured your skirt looks.
Ideal fabrics:
-
Viscose / Rayon – soft drape, very swishy, great for full circles
-
Lightweight cotton lawn or poplin – easy to sew, holds shape well
-
Tencel / Lyocell – fluid drape with a modern feel
-
Chambray (lightweight) – casual and wearable
-
Crepe (poly or viscose) – lovely movement with minimal bulk
-
Silk or silk blends – floaty and elegant (for confident sewists)
-
Heavier options (best for half or quarter circle):
-
Cotton sateen
-
Lightweight denim or twill
-
Wool blends (fine / lightweight only)
-
Budget-Friendly / Upcycling Option
-
Double duvet covers – large enough for a full circle skirt,
-
Fabrics to avoid:
-
Very thick or stiff fabrics (upholstery, heavy denim)
-
Fabrics with little drape (canvas, heavy cord)
-
Very slippery fabrics unless you’re confident (satin, chiffon)
-

Fabric Tips
-
Soft, drapey fabrics (viscose, rayon, cotton lawn, tencel) = best for full circle skirts
-
Medium-weight fabrics (sateen, lightweight denim, wool blends) = better for half or quarter circles
-
Avoid thick or stiff fabrics (heavy denim, canvas)
-
Double duvet covers = easy, wide, and budget-friendly option
By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a finished circle skirt — full, half, or quarter — in mini, midi, or maxi length, plus the skills to confidently make more at home.
