Waistcoat Tailoring 2 Day Course

Create a beautifully tailored waistcoat while learning the essential techniques used in professional garment construction. This course is ideal for confident beginners looking to expand their sewing skills, as well as experienced sewists who want to explore the art of tailoring.

Throughout the course, you'll be guided step by step through every stage of the process, from preparing your pattern and cutting your fabric to constructing the garment with precision. You'll learn how to achieve a professional finish using traditional tailoring methods, including accurate fitting, interfacing, shaping, pocket construction, lining, and neat finishing techniques.

By the end of the course, you'll have a custom-made waistcoat tailored to fit you, along with the confidence and skills to create more tailored garments in the future.

Choose from two sewing patterns:

• Merchants and Mills - The Miller Sizes: 6 to 28 A softly structured waistcoat with a boxy fit, two welt pockets and a simple stitched belt at the back. Layer up in the winter or wear on its own in the summer in a tumbled linen.
• Butterick Sewing Pattern B6901 Lisette Misses’ Waistcoat - fully lined button front waistcoat has back ties Sizes 6 to 24 
• McCall’s Sewing Pattern M8415 Men’s Lined Waistcoat, Shirts, Tie and Bow Tie - Waistcoat has front welts, back and back belt use lining fabric Size S to XXXL

• The Marlowe Waistcoat sewing pattern from Fabric Godmother beautifully blends tailoring with everyday style. Designed with a softly structured, feminine feel, it features a sleek, fitted silhouette, fully enclosed lining and optional welt pockets. Perfect worn on its own as a stylish sleeveless top or layered for a polished look.

What you'll learn:

• Reading and preparing a commercial pattern
• Accurate fabric cutting and marking
• Applying interfacing and stabilising key areas
• Constructing welt or patch pockets (depending on the pattern)
• Creating a tailored fit with darts and shaping
• Attaching the lining for a clean, professional finish
• Buttonholes, buttons and final pressing techniques

To Bring:

Fabric suggestions - 5-8oz linen, 5-10oz denim, light - medium weight corduroy, wool, wool blends, cotton canvas or twill. For the lining: lightweight wovens such as calico, cotton lawn, cotton, cotton blends, Tencel/linen (when choosing your cloth consider that the lining fabric may be visible)

Fabric requirement :

1.5 metres Main/Outer 1.5 lining
